The idolatry of the NRA leadership is how it equates security with gun ownership. There are 300 million guns in this country — so why aren’t we more secure? Why do we feel more at risk than ever before?
[Some] say that the NRA’s gun rhetoric is a stand-in for “freedom.” Well, I think “freedom” often becomes an idol too! As does the American flag, the 2nd Amendment, the nation-state, etc. I love this country. I love my liberties. Am I willing to die for them? I hope so. But am I willing to kill for them or sacrifice my daughter to them or your kids or my neighbors’ kids? Absolutely not. True freedom is found in a total declaration of allegiance to the in-breaking Kingdom of God — allegiance that will often put followers of Jesus at odds with the empires, constitutions, and lobbyists of this beloved world. True freedom is found in taking up the cross and following The Way of sacrificial love. As Paul wrote to the Galatians: “For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery…You were called for freedom…Do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love.”
