Lincoln, Republican?

My current audiobook is LINCOLN: THE BIOGRAPHY OF A WRITER. I’m struck by how many of Abraham Lincoln’s political positions differ from that of the modern Republican party: federalism over states’ rights, pro-central bank, anti free-trade (inasmuch as he favored protective tariffs), wary of evangelical fervor, and uncomfortable with Jefferson’s famous statement about “the tree of liberty” being “refreshed by the blood of patriots and tyrants” (a favorite Tea Party quote).
